Western Slope Challenge at the High Desert RacePlace
Radio controlled car meets are becoming more and more common of late, with the scale getting larger every time. By scale, obviously we’re not talking about the scale of the cars, we’re talking about the scale of events. The cars remain quite small.
This weekend just gone saw the Western Slope Challenge at the High Desert RacePlace, where professional radio controlled car drivers met up for a series of frantic races. Gathering a good 2 1/2 hours before the race, the drivers started to build their cars and tweak them for the performance to come.
Chris Marsh, a radio controlled car racer from Denver, Colorado, said:
Part of the fun is to put it all together
Marsh has been racing RC cars for 16 years and even has sponsorship from one of the major RC brands, TEAM LOSI. This allows Marsh to pick up parts for his car far cheaper. Sponsorship is relatively common now for the more high profile of the radio control car racers.
Marsh says the general goal of an RC race is to avoid wrecking your car. They can be very easy to crash because of the incredible speeds.
All of us are just speed freaks. Some of the guys involved used to race Motocross and got hurt, so now they’re racing these.
The biggest expense for the drivers is usually the tires, as they get wrecked during each short race.
New tires are the biggest expense. We go through those like crazy. We change them after every race.
