Playing with radio controlled cars keeps kids off the streets
The Mildred Hunter Community Center in Valdosa has started up its own radio controlled car club, which it hopes will help to teach the children valuable lessons about life.
The kids involved in the car club meet up two times during the week and on weekends to practise their car racing skills, and to race against other teams of car racing enthusiasts.
The idea is that the club, and racing cars as part of a team, will give the children some positive role models and to offer them an alternative to other, more controversial after school activities.
The club leader, Andre Newson, says:
It’s rewarding to get them involved in RC racing. You get to mentor kids, talk to them and it’s not only running the car but dealing with their heads, what their thinking about and counseling them on what’s going on at home.
Apparently the club has attracted parents and grandparents to come and watch the races, so it’s even helping to bring families together in shared activities.
They meet at the Mildred Hunter Community Center every Tuesdays and Thursday at 5:30 PM.
